Press Release written by Senator John Flanagan (District 2) posted on his website, April 22, 2014
Thank you for your wonderful contribution to the New York State Senate’s Earth Day Poster Contest. This year we received many outstanding posters that exemplify the creativity of the young people in the 2nd Senatorial District.
Each entry from my District displayed tremendous originality and vision as well as obvious concern for the ecological future of our communities and our state. I am proud of your work and that of your classmates, and encourage you to continue to study and learn more about the serious challenges that face our environment.
I am pleased to announce that the winner of the 2014 Earth Day Poster Contest from my District is:
Zachary Goldstein
Grade 4
Smithtown Elementary School
And I would like to offer my wholehearted congratulations to all of the participants in this year’s Contest. I also want to thank your family and give special thanks to your teachers, whose dedication and involvement in this event provided the encouragement for you to be creative and participate in the 2014 Earth Day Poster Contest.
Sincerely,
Senator John Flanagan

Fourth grade Smithtown Elementary art student Zachary was awarded first place in the 2014 New York State Senate Earth Day Poster contest. Fellow artists Amanda, Lilyanna and Zoe were honorary participants. All artists were encouraged to partake in this year’s competition by their art teacher, Ms. Lewis.
The contest was from every corner of New York State and invited school children in grades K-6. Zachary’s winning poster was given special recognition under Senator John Flanagan’s District Two website.
The Senate’s goal is to encourage children to develop an awareness of the environment and to encourage the exchange of ideas about recycling and waste reduction among schools and their communities. The theme of this year’s contest was Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Congratulations to Zachary and honorary participants, Amanda, Lilyanna and Zoe. We are so very proud of all of you!
